Happy Birthday Remix

It's my birthday, but I'm giving everyone else a gift. Here's my greatest acheivement from last night's adventures with Virtual DJ.

Virtual DJ

Music is a wonderful thing. But now, in our age of the microprocessor, music is not only free and as common and dirt, but its as malleable as a piece of clay.

While at Brown, a very good friend of mine, K. Adam, gave me the tools to mix music on my very own computer. By way of a crash course with our computer planted side by side at a TechHouse dance party, he taught me how to be a (amateur) DJ.

And now, with a little bit of boredom, a bit of inspiration, and two pints of coffee, I am having the time of my life manipulating music, piecing it and pasting it together. I, only in the last few hours, have become the Dr. Frankenstein of music. It is satisfying beyond words to take a piece of art, beautiful already, and turn it into a new creation that bears similarities to the original but is noticeably and significantly different.

When looking for musical art these days, I land consistently on music from Cirque du Soleil shows. And so I took my spare time and poured it into making their music better, or at least point it towards a different purpose: instead of having the music accompany a show of gymnastics and acrobatics, I wanted to make Cirque music good for dancing, a la TechHouse dance parties or a discotheque in Montreal.

My results: I took three Cirque songs, and made them all easier to grind to. One of them was a remix already, and I extended it and added more samples of the song it was originally remixed from. Another I added a bass track.

As I only have enough webspace for one, I'll share here the third of the three, a song which I remixed with itself. So, I present you with but one taste of my little bassy fruit, along with the original.
